Austria: 2025 Harvest – qualitative and promising

Austria’s 2025 vintage unfolds under ideal conditions, delivering wines that combine freshness, balance, and varietal purity. After a challenging 2024, this promising harvest gives a great signals to the Austrian wine sector!

vertdevin magazine Austria - 2025 Harvest report Weißburgunder grapeAustria concludes the 2025 harvest on a positive note, with an estimated yield of 2.6 million hectolitres, representing a 4% increase compared to 2024. The country reaffirms its position as a stable wine producer in Central Europe, focusing more on quality and varietal identity than on volume.

Favourable Weather Conditions

The 2025 vintage was shaped by a mild spring without major frost, followed by a warm but not extreme summer punctuated by regular rainfall. These conditions allowed for steady ripening, preserving the grapes’ natural acidity while limiting water stress.
The August weather (hot days and cool nights) promoted overall harmony, encouraging the development of delicate aromas and fine aromatic expression across both white and red varieties. This thermal contrast helped strengthen the wines’ structure and freshness, resulting in a balanced and harmonious profile.

Regional Variations

  • Niederösterreich: The country’s largest wine-growing region recorded growth of around +5%, supported by balanced weather conditions. White varieties such as Grüner Veltliner show excellent health and the typical crisp freshness for which the region is known.
  • Burgenland: Renowned for its full-bodied reds and sweet wines, Burgenland achieved a stable harvest, slightly above 2024 levels (+3%). Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch benefited from generous sunshine and good concentration.
  • Steiermark: With its cooler, wetter climate, Styria delivered a stable harvest, favouring aromatic white wines like Sauvignon Blanc and Welschriesling. Regular rainfall sustained vine vitality but kept yields moderate.
  • Vienna (Wien): The capital’s urban vineyards continue to thrive, maintaining stable volumes and producing balanced white wines — particularly in the traditional Gemischter Satz field blends.

The 2025 harvest stands out for its quality and consistency, with expressive, fresh white wines and concentrated yet well-balanced reds. The vintage is especially significant as it follows a challenging 2024, marked by lower yields and irregular conditions. As such, 2025 could further strengthen Austrian wines’ momentum on international markets.
