One of Spain’s most celebrated and expensive cult wines. Alvaro Palacios, trained in oenology in Bordeaux, is one of the pioneers of the region. He is a champion of Spain’s terroir and he’s been a true defender of the Garnacha’s potential. Notably, his admirable work includes propelling the two amazing and unique regions of Priorat and Bierzo into the spotlights. Also, refocusing on old Garnacha vines, the traditional variety that had fallen out of favour in Rioja Baja and that is now considered the true Spanish treasure and heritage. He’s calling Garnacha “The queen Grape of Rioja Baja” and encourages producers to come back to this variety that was once traditional there. Finca Dofí is from a single-estate vineyard planted to 60% Garnacha along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Cariñena. This wine is alluring, silky smooth and endowed with beautiful herb and mineral notes along with light oak, fine tannins and non-stop length on the finish. I always felt the qualitative style of Alvaro’s wines comes from restraint. The wine is showing the meticulous work behind it with elegance, a keen presence and grace.
