Piastraia 2023: Michele Satta celebrates 30 years of an iconic Bolgheri wine

New label, Bordeaux varieties only and the affirmation of the second generation: an anniversary vintage looking firmly to the future.

With the 2023 vintage, the Michele Satta estate celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of Piastraia with a new visual identity and a clear oenological direction. Now classified as Bolgheri Superiore DOC, this cuvée has accompanied the development of the appellation for three decades and has become one of the emblematic wines of the estate. To mark this milestone, the winery unveils a new label whose graphic concept is based on the inversion of colours. This deliberately simple design gesture symbolises the idea of turning the hourglass: not to close a cycle, but to open a new chapter in the wine’s history. The aim is to offer a renewed perspective on time and on the evolution of Piastraia while preserving the identity that has shaped its reputation.
The 2023 vintage also marks an important evolution in the blend. After Syrah left the assemblage from the 2019 vintage and Sangiovese from the 2023 harvest, Piastraia is now based exclusively on Bordeaux grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. This choice reflects the estate’s intention to express the identity of Bolgheri’s terroir with greater precision through a contemporary interpretation of the region’s winegrowing code. According to Giacomo Satta, who now represents the second generation leading the estate, Piastraia is “the elegant wine of the winery”. Its evolution has always been guided by a search for stylistic coherence and precision. This philosophy can be summarised simply: less interpretation, more precision in the expression of terroir.

Created in 1994, Piastraia was born from the idea of combining Bolgheri’s great international grape varieties with the Mediterranean and Tuscan nuances of the territory. The first wine in the area to carry the mention Bolgheri Rosso, it became Bolgheri Rosso Superiore in 2012, reflecting the maturity reached by the vineyards and the greater complexity achieved by the wine. The 2023 vintage continues this stylistic line with separate fermentations for each grape variety in truncated cone concrete vats, the use of indigenous yeasts and ageing in French barriques, 40 percent of which are new, for 12 to 18 months. With an ageing potential estimated at around twenty years, Piastraia 2023 stands both as a celebratory wine and as a projection toward the future.
