Discover the terroir of the Barolo Perno Cappella di S. Stefano of Rocche dei Manzoni

Based in Monforte d’Alba, the winery has been run by the Migliorini family

First produced in 1993, the 2019 vintage of Barolo Perno Cappella di S. Stefano adopts a historic label design. This decision celebrates the 50th anniversary of the winery’s foundation. The austere typography and colors of the label reflect the character of the vintage itself: essential and refined.

Perno, with its Cappella di S. Stefano, represents a crossroads between history and landscape. The locality, proudly displayed on the label as a Geographic Mention (Perno), symbolizes the connection between culture, nature, and winemaking. From a historical perspective, the chapel, with its last major conservation restorations completed in 1757, embodies centuries of religious and architectural history. Structurally dated to the 12th century, it features a Romanesque apse in stone, a testament to its medieval origins.

In the 1970s, restorations led by “Italia Nostra” preserved valuable wall paintings, including a fragment from the 14th-15th century depicting a saint and a late Gothic fresco of the stoning of Santo Stefano -a rare example of popular art dedicated to martyr saints.

Perched at 394 meters above sea level, the chapel is now a must-visit destination for those exploring the Langhe region, whether by e-bike or car. The vineyard’s soil, marked by the presence of Diano Sandstone and a cooler microclimate compared to Villero and Monprivato, gives the wine a distinctive character. This unique terroir contributes to a deeper color and an intense aromatic profile.

For Rocche dei Manzoni, the 2019 vintage initially appears restrained but is already open and approachable, thanks to the intelligent use of oak. On the palate, it reveals softness and breadth, with a finish that hints at the vineyard’s evolutionary potential, as tannins are still maturing.
