SQNPI – The Consorzio Tutela Vini Collio confirms its commitment to sustainability

Cormons, 29 October 2024

The Consorzio Collio’s path towards sustainability continues, in its role as an Associate Operator of the Sistema di Qualità Nazionale di Produzione Integrata (SQNPI) (National Quality System of Integrated Production) and detecting an increasing number of requests from local wineries to obtain SQNPI certification, a symbol of the concrete responsibility of wineries for a more sustainable future.

A path that the Consorzio di Tutela Vini Collio started already in 2021, becoming an Associate Operator to obtain the SQNPI mark. The aim of this important project is to enhance the promotion of wine production with the utmost attention to the territory. With great satisfaction, in recent years, the Consortium has noticed a significant increase in the number of companies that have joined the group of applicant wineries, and the numbers speak for themselves.

The SQNPI certification in 2021 involved 13 companies, which will become 28 for a surface area of approximately 570 ha in 2024. These companies, which have applied for certification in associated form through the opportunity provided by the Consortium, will be added to those that have been doing so individually for several years, bringing the area to a total of about 900 ha SQNPI certified and about 200 ha BIO certified in 2023.

For the Consortium, which has always been committed to sustainable viticultural and oenological practices, the SQNPI certification represents official recognition of its companies’ modus operandi.

These are concrete steps for the protection of the environment that lay the foundations for a more sustainable tomorrow. The objective is to obtain certification for the entire territory and to deliver into the hands of future generations a Collio capable of still expressing itself at its best. Collio is a wonderful wine-growing region whose uniqueness and specificity are also confirmed by the data. With a surface area of around 1,300 hectares, it produced a total of around 7,300,000 bottles in 2023, a slight increase compared to 2022 of 0.13% and following a positive trend year on year since 2019 (+ 9%).

This most recent 2024 vintage took place at the end of a meteorologically complex agricultural year, which led to a drop in production, but with perfectly healthy grapes of excellent quality.

‘We are aware that we are responsible custodians of a production and cultural heritage of rare value,’ says Lavinia Zamaro, Director of the Consorzio Collio, ’and for us it becomes fundamental to draw the guidelines for a viticulture that respects people and nature. With our contribution, we can all work together, safeguarding the environment and at the same time finding sustainable solutions from a productive and also economic-financial point of view for our producers, who represent a fundamental value-creating chain for the entire region‘.

INTEGRATED PRODUCTION (SQNPI) is an ‘agro-food production system that uses all the methods and means of production and defence against the adversities of agricultural production aimed at minimising the use of synthetic chemical substances and rationalising agronomic techniques, in compliance with ecological, economic and toxicological principles’ (art. 2, paragraph 4, L.4 of 3 February 2011).

Starting from the year 2023, theSQNPI Observatory has been set up by the ReteRurale system. Any citizen will be able to report any non-conformities by quality operators by sending an email to OsservatorioSQNPI@masaf.gov.it.

Further information on certification can be found on the ReteRurale portal or by contacting the offices of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Collio.
