VDP.Sekt – a mosaic of regions and styles

Germany’s finest sparkling wines are increasingly found under the banner of VDP.Sektand VDP.Sekt.Prestige – categories that signal a decisive shift from volume-driven Sekt toward terroir-expressive sparkling wine. Produced by members of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP), these Sekts must be made exclusively from estate-grown grapes and fermented according to the traditional method, with extended lees ageing that brings texture, complexity and finesse. The distinction between the two categories lies primarily in maturation and ambition: while VDP.Sekt requires a minimum of 15 months on lees (24 months for vintage wine), VDP.Sekt.Prestige must spend at least 36 months ageing before release, resulting in greater depth, structure and ageing potential. Together, they showcase Germany not only as a master of Riesling still wines, but as one of Europe’s most compelling sources of world-class sparkling wine.
