Mazzei, Castello Fonterutoli, Castellina 2020 – Chianti Classico Gran Selezione

The wine has a ruby color of medium intensity. The first nose offers savory notes of sweet spices (ground cloves, crushed coriander seeds, liquorice, nutmeg, cardamom) and roasted aromatic herbs (roasted thyme and rosemary), which are complemented by notes of oregano and dried mint, rose and wild flowers, with a touch of torrefaction (sweet coffee, slightly milky, toasted hazelnut, toasted bread) and ripe fruits (wild strawberry, morello cherry, redcurrant jelly, raspberry coulis, blackcurrant crushed, wild plum, blackberry, dried red cherry, cranberries). The palate is lively, chiselled and offers tannic power, enveloped in juicy fruitiness. It expresses notes of ripe morello cherry, tangy bigarreau cherry, crushed raspberry, crushed blackcurrant, crunchy strawberry, cranberries and black plum, associated with a good bitterness of coffee and bergamot, with notes of torrefaction (bread toasted, toasted hazelnut), aromatic herbs (thyme, oregano, peppermint, a hint of sage) and sweet spices (cumin, crushed coriander seeds, toasted vanilla). The tannins are powerful, but powdery, fine and silky. Great persistence on the palate, with good bitterness of tannins, notes of cocoa, dark chocolate and macerated cherry in chocolate. The acidity is crispy and salivating and adds liveliness to the wine. A wine with potential, which needs time to open up.
