Ioppa Balsina 2018 – Ghemme

The wine has a pale ruby color. The nose opens with notes of fresh, macerated and dried fruits (amarena cherry, morello cherry, dried raspberry, fresh red currants), combined with a light mineral touch of graphite, a mentholated hint (liquorice, dried mint, pine needles), toasted and floral notes (dried rose, peony). Then, we find the tertiary notes of tobacco, undergrowth and dried mushrooms in the background. The palate offers a savory attack, with clear tertiary notes (undergrowth, dried tobacco), a toasted side that then opens (toasted hazelnut, smoked), supported by fruits (dried red cherry, dried raspberry, morello cherry, strawberry, dried blackcurrant), spices (nutmeg, a hint of liquorice) and flowers (dried rose, faded peony). The finish is quite persistent and reveals a light mineral structure, a good bitterness of dried grapefruit, as well as a lively salivating acidity, which balances the grippy tannins.
