Domaine de Pignan 2022 – Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The wine has a ruby color of medium intensity, even pale, and very slight reflections of garnet. On first nose, the wine is reserved, but presents density, complexity, tension and a sensation of texture. The second nose first expresses a smoky touch and varied and savoury herbaceous aromas: we find in particular the aromas of fresh bay leaf, roasted thyme, fresh rosemary, rosemary in syrup, fresh wild mint, menthol (even eucalyptus), as well as a hint of fresh pine needles (combined with a touch of pine sap), fresh sage and pine cones in syrup. Then, we find a fine floral bouquet (violet, peony, lilac), delicate and integrated woody and spicy notes (roasted pine nuts, fresh wood, liquorice, cardamom, juniper, roasted coriander seeds, dark chocolate, coffee and a very light touch of vanilla), wrapped in juicy and ripe fruit (fresh wild strawberry, crushed morello cherry, black plum, red cherry jam, roasted red cherry, blackberry). The palate offers a silky texture, very fine and melted tannins, as well as a herbaceous and spicy attack. It expresses notes of wild mint, sage, fresh rosemary, roasted thyme, eucalyptus, liquorice, roasted coriander seeds, white pepper, a hint of vanilla and nutmeg. Then, we smell the notes of roasting (toasted pine nuts, dark chocolate, coffee, toasted almond, heated wood in the background) and sweet and ripe fruits (wild strawberry, morello cherry, ripe black plum, prunes in chocolate, blackberry, raspberry jam), as well as dried flowers (dried violet, dried peony). The finish is very long, minty and grassy, with dynamic and fresh acidity. A great wine of great potential and complexity.
