Château du Val d’Or 2021 – Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

The wine has a ruby color of medium intensity. The nose is closed at first and requires aeration. It then expresses fresh notes of peppermint, pine needles (even pine sap), associated with aromas of black fruits (morello cherry, black plum, blackcurrant, blackberry in the background), as well as wild strawberry and red plum jam. We also find touches of sweet spices (liquorice, a hint of star anise, grilled vanilla, nutmeg) and peony. The palate is chiseled, straight and rather tight, with slightly drying tannins. It expresses notes of tangy fruits (bigarreau cherry, blueberry, blackcurrant, black plum, morello cherry), torrefaction (coffee), spices (liquorice, black pepper on the finish, nutmeg). At the end of the palate, we also find herbaceous flavors (mint, blackcurrant leaf), minerality (limestone) and a slight bitterness. The finish is persistent, with flavors of tangy fruit, but a little dry. Good acidity which balances a certain astringency.
