5 years ago, in 2020, the new three-level Crus Bourgeois du Médoc classification was unveiled. This project, which required 10 years of work, aimed to re-establish the historical hierarchy in the Médoc, as well as to reward and highlight the quality of the wines and the commitment of the properties in production and in protecting the environment.
In 2025, as part of the Wine Paris Vinexpo trade fair, the new classification will be unveiled, composed since 2020 of three levels: Cru Bourgeois, Cru Bourgeois Supérieur and Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel. To be eligible for the “Cru Bourgeois” level, the wines of a château must meet strict sensory analysis criteria, evaluated by a committee of professional tasters on the basis of five vintages. To be eligible for a mention, a property must be committed to an environmental approach, as well as meet the criteria of traceability of the technical itinerary from the vine to the bottle and promotion of the vintage.
Once the classification is established, random organoleptic controls are put in place to monitor the quality of the wines.
The Crus Bourgeois classification, revisable every five years, aims to bring together the historic family of Médoc wine estates, to encourage them in their environmental and quality approaches, as well as to guarantee consumers an expected level of wine quality.
In 2020, 249 châteaux were classified, including 179 Crus Bourgeois, 56 Crus Bourgeois Supérieurs and 14 Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnels. The next classification was unveiled on February 10, 2025 as part of Wine Paris 2025.
The new classification includes 170 châteaux : 14 Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnels, 36 Crus Bourgeois Supérieurs and 120 Crus Bourgeois.
