Morellino di Scansano: the “Superiore” designation marks a new milestone for the DOCG at Vinitaly 2026

At Vinitaly 2026, the Consorzio Morellino di Scansano is showcasing a key evolution of the denomination with the official introduction of the “Superiore” designation. Located in Hall 9, stand B17, the consortium brings together 38 wineries and 53 wines, offering a comprehensive overview of Morellino di Scansano DOCG, from Annata to Riserva, now enhanced by this new qualitative tier.

Based in the Maremma area in southern Tuscany, the appellation is primarily built on Sangiovese, locally known as “Morellino”. Established as a DOC in 1978 and elevated to DOCG status in 2007, Morellino di Scansano has gradually defined a distinctive identity, shaped by a warmer coastal climate and a more approachable style compared to inland Tuscan denominations. Freshness, balance and drinkability have long been its defining traits.

In this context, the introduction of the “Superiore” designation does not represent a break, but rather a formal recognition. It acknowledges a category of wines already present in production practices, while introducing stricter parameters. These include lower yields, a higher minimum alcohol level and longer ageing requirements compared to the Annata category. The aim is to support a clear move upmarket while preserving the hallmark harmony and accessibility of Morellino. “The Superiore does not introduce something new, it recognises and enhances an expression already rooted in our production,” explains Bernardo Guicciardini Calamai, president of the consortium. “It is an important step in strengthening both the identity and the credibility of the denomination, offering the market a clearer interpretation of our coastal Sangiovese.”

This evolution reflects a broader trend across Italian appellations, where clearer segmentation helps structure the offer and meet international market expectations. The Morellino di Scansano Superiore is therefore positioned as a wine with greater structure, depth and ageing potential, while maintaining the gourmand, accessible character that defines the denomination. For Alessio Durazzi, director of the consortium, presenting this new tier at Vinitaly is particularly significant: “Vinitaly is where this evolution takes shape through dialogue with the market. The diversity of wines on show reflects a denomination that has reached maturity and is evolving with consistency.”

Beyond the announcement, the consortium’s presence at Vinitaly 2026 highlights a clear ambition to further structure the positioning of Morellino di Scansano on the international stage. Balancing tradition with adaptation to evolving market expectations, the “Superiore” designation emerges as a strategic tool to support the continued rise of this dynamic Tuscan DOCG.
