A major diplomatic step forward that strengthens the protection and visibility of Bourgogne wines on the Chinese market.

5 December 2025 marks a major milestone for the Bourgogne wine industry. China has officially incorporated 70 new Bourgogne Protected Designations of Origin into its regulatory framework. This development adds to the 10 PDOs already recorded since May 2024 and brings to 80 the total number of appellations now protected in the People’s Republic of China. Only four PDOs remain pending the completion of legal and administrative procedures, with a resolution expected in the near future.

China: 70 new Bourgogne PDOs now officially registered and protected, Hospices de BeauneThis recognition was one of the key outcomes of the State visit conducted by the French President to China on 4 and 5 December. It follows a « coordinated diplomatic effort » involving France, the European Union and the Chinese authorities, initiated with the 100 100 agreement signed in September 2020. The Comité Bourgogne and the Confédération des Appellations et Vignerons de Bourgogne accelerated their efforts from 2023 onwards, multiplying technical exchanges, meetings with CNIPA and field visits in Bourgogne to deepen understanding of the PDO framework. The outcome reflects the effectiveness of an ongoing dialogue, considered constructive by all parties involved. For the industry, this is a decisive step. The appellations concerned now benefit from enhanced legal protection, essential for combating misuse, safeguarding identity and ensuring value creation in a fast evolving market.

Laurent Delaunay, co president of the interprofession, emphasises the importance of this achievement, describing it as highly symbolic. In his view, this recognition opens a new chapter for Bourgogne in China, a market whose potential remains largely untapped. He also acknowledges the crucial role played by the INAO, professional organisations, the French Embassy in China and the Chinese authorities.

The presence of Bourgogne wines in China has grown significantly over the past decade. Between 2015 and 2024, export volumes doubled, rising from 1.4 million to nearly 3 million bottles. The year 2025 confirms this momentum, with a slight increase in volumes over the first nine months, reaching 2.46 million bottles, despite a moderate decline in value.
