Cava: Five New Paraje Calificado Wines Reach the Pinnacle of Quality

The D.O. CAVA strengthens its prestige with five new Guarda Superior Paraje Calificado releases, bringing the total to fifteen wines at the very top of its quality pyramid.

The qualitative summit of D.O. CAVA continues to rise. Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has officially ratified five new Guarda Superior Paraje Calificado Cavas, with their approval published in the Official State Gazette. This distinction, the highest within the appellation, now encompasses fifteen wines that stand as benchmarks of excellence and singularity.

Three of the newly approved Cavas come from Sumarroca, based in El Rebato in the Penedès: Núria Claverol Allier Finca Cols, Núria Claverol Homenatge Finca Peretes, and Núria Claverol Blanc de Noirs Finca Rosendo. They are joined by L’Era del Celdoni from Carles Andreu, produced from a vineyard in Pira in Conca de Barberà, and MIM Natura Blanc de Noirs from Vins El Cep, crafted from a Pinot Noir vineyard in the Can Prats estate in Espiells. In parallel, the Vallcirera estate of Art Laietà d’Alta Alella has been expanded.

All five wines successfully met a particularly demanding regulatory framework before being revalidated by a high-level tasting panel composed of Masters of Wine, leading sommeliers and technical directors of the appellation. This dual process ensures not only technical compliance but also sensory excellence at the highest level.

The Guarda Superior Paraje Calificado category is reserved for Cavas originating from a single estate with exceptional soil and microclimatic characteristics. The requirements are stringent: vineyards must be more than ten years old, yields are capped at 8,000 kg per hectare, harvesting must be carried out by hand, and vinification must take place on the estate. Production is limited to Brut Nature, Extra Brut or Brut styles, the wines must be vintage-dated, and ageing on lees must extend for a minimum of 36 months. From the 2025 harvest onwards, all Paraje Calificado Cavas must also be certified 100% organic. Full traceability from vineyard to market release is mandatory.

Beyond the standard controls applied within the appellation, these Cavas are subject to reinforced official oversight and ministerial approval, underlining their rare and demanding status. According to D.O. Cava President Javier Pagés, the continued growth of this elite category reflects a firm commitment to enhancing Cava’s global prestige through wines of unquestionable quality.

Exported to more than 100 countries, with over 70% of sales abroad, D.O. Cava continues to assert its position among the world’s leading traditional method sparkling wines, rooted in origin, land and sustainability.
