Biondi-Santi celebrates generations and unveils new vintages
One of the oldest estates of Montalcino presents its latest releases, the La Storica 1983 Riserva and the fifth edition of its cultural project La Voce di Biondi-Santi.
In Montalcino, Biondi-Santi continues to anchor its identity in the continuity of generations. The Tuscan estate, guardian of an iconic Brunello style, presents its new vintages while pursuing its cultural initiative La Voce di Biondi-Santi, whose fifth edition is dedicated to the theme of Generations.
“For Biondi-Santi, generations are fundamental,” explains Giampiero Bertolini, CEO of the estate since 2018. From Clemente Biondi-Santi, who gave Brunello its name, to Ferruccio, a pioneer of wines designed for longevity at the end of the nineteenth century, each era has shaped the identity of the estate. Tancredi Biondi-Santi later left his mark with the legendary Riserva 1955 and the preservation of the historic cellar at Il Greppo, while Franco Biondi-Santi, often referred to as the gentleman of Brunello, introduced innovative winemaking techniques and carried out one of the earliest clonal selections of Sangiovese, the BBS11 clone.
This continuity is reflected today in the character of the estate’s wines. Their style is defined by freshness, precision and a strong connection to the historic vineyards of Il Greppo. It represents the transmission of knowledge and sensitivity that strengthens with each passing generation.
The theme of generations also guides the fifth edition of La Voce di Biondi-Santi, the cultural project launched in 2022. For the 2026 edition, the estate collaborated with the Holden School of Writing in Turin. Five students were invited to Tenuta Greppo to interpret the emotion of the place through writing and voice. The result is a series of five stories presented as podcasts within a virtual literary salon.
From a wine perspective, the presentation highlights three cuvées. Rosso di Montalcino 2023 serves as the gateway to the Biondi-Santi universe. Despite a growing season marked by climatic fluctuations and irregular rainfall, the vintage has produced an authentic and refined Sangiovese that combines immediacy with identity.
Brunello di Montalcino 2020 stands as an impressive classic. Born from a bright and balanced season, it reveals finesse from the first sip, supported by a seamless harmony between acidity and tannins. “It is a contemplative wine that reveals itself over time,” notes Federico Radi, the estate’s Technical Director.
Finally, Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019, the forty-fourth edition of the cuvée, comes from an exceptionally balanced growing year. Precise and vibrant, it shows lively freshness, very fine tannins and a long, pure finish.
The estate also releases the new edition of La Storica, offering in extremely limited
quantities the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 1983. Today it stands as a wine of remarkable complexity, with silky tannins and a long harmonious finish, demonstrating Biondi-Santi’s unique ability to age Brunello gracefully across decades.
