A JOURNEY THROUGH GEORGIA’S NATIVE TERROIRS

Georgia is considered one of the historical birthplaces of wine, with evidence of viticulture dating back more than 8,000 years. Over the centuries, the country has developed a deeply rooted wine culture where ancestral traditions coexist with contemporary approaches.

The qvevri, a large clay vessel buried in the ground for fermentation and ageing, remains one of the most emblematic symbols of this heritage. Georgian terroirs are remarkably diverse, ranging from the sunlit plains of Kakheti to the cooler, more mountainous areas near the Caucasus. This mosaic includes clay limestone, alluvial, volcanic and schist soils, each offering a specific expression of texture, energy and minerality in the wines. Such diversity of soils and altitudes allows for a wide range of styles, often marked by a combination of freshness, structure and depth. The flagship grape is Saperavi, a rare teinturier variety capable of producing intensely coloured wines with power, ripeness and a natural acidity that provides balance and ageing potential. Many other indigenous varieties also play a key role, contributing to the richness of the country’s viticultural heritage. Today, Georgia stands as a dynamic scene where millennia of tradition meet a qualitative revival driven by winemakers committed to expressing the singularity of their terroirs.
