Cantina Vignaiolo Scansano

Tasting of aged Vermentino and fresh Sangiovese !

The Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano is a cooperativewinery founded in 1972 by a small group of producers fromScansano. Today thanks to those who decided to join their forces the winery is extended on 700 hectares (mostlyspreading in the area of Scansano, Magliano and) and count almost 170 members. Unlike many cooperatives, they decided in the 1990s to no longer be focused on mass production but on quality, investingin production tools/cellar, in sorting qualities as well as in identifying the different terroirs available. We were lucky to be invited to the cantina to explore it and to a vertical tasting of Vermentino as well as their “Sicomoro” cuvée (100% Sangiovese). The first is a white grape varietyvinified rigorously but without the objective of aging…and yetsome vintages present themselves in very beautiful ways aftera few years in the bottle. The Sangiovese as for him, it fully expresses its terroir, its “altitude” freshness (300/500meters above sea level) as well as its work in barrels done sparingly.

« Vermentino is one of the typical varieties of Maremma. Hereit has found its ideal habitat thanks to the proximity of the seawhich enhances its mineral character, acidity and aromas. As a Winery we’ve been exploring the versatile character of thisgrape. We got the idea after tasting older vintages of ourVermentino Vigna Fiorini and realising that it showed a veryinteresting ageing potential. As for Morellino di Scansano Riserva Sicomoro, it’s one of the historic labels for the Winery and comes from a selectedvineyard of one of our associated producers. It’s an interpretation of Sangiovese that aims to enhance the naturalelegance of this grape variety while drawing from the terroir, with its closeness of the sea, its sunny hills and sea breezes. » (Sergio Bucci, General Manager)
