Carus Gaudio 2018 – Chianti Classico Gran Selezione

(organic) The wine has a pale ruby color with slight garnet reflections. The nose opens with a tertiary hint (dried tobacco, dried rose, a touch of faded peony), toasted (toasted hazelnut, toasted wood and coffee in the background) and spicy (liquorice, even star anise and crushed cardamom, a very slight hint of cinnamon in the background). It then expresses notes of tart red cherry, dried blackcurrant, raspberry, dried cranberries and strawberry. The palate is juicy, even slightly sweet, but offers a lively and tangy attack (red cherry, cranberries, crushed raspberry, blackcurrant), as well as gripping and slightly drying tannins. It also expresses notes of cardamom, liquorice, nutmeg, a hint of smoke and roasting (coffee, bitter cocoa, toasted raw hazelnut), cocoa nibs, as well as tobacco, wet leaves and faded rose in the background. The finish is quite persistent, savoury and lively, with a salivating acidity, present tertiary notes (tobacco, faded rose), as well as a slight minty hint (dried mint) and a good bitterness of cocoa and cranberries.
