Vieux Château Mazerat 2021 – Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

The wine has a ruby color of medium intensity. The nose is fresh and minty – it expresses pleasant notes of menthol, pine needles, peppermint and tangy and gourmand fruits (blackcurrant, morello cherry, black plum, as well as wild strawberry and bird cherry), associated with a pronounced spicy and woody aromas (fresh wood, liquorice, even star anise, cardamom, vanilla in the background), a floral touch (peony, lily) and torrefaction (toast, toasted hazelnut). The palate is juicy and fruity, even slightly sweet. It expresses notes of ripe morello cherry, chocolate cherry, black plum (with a touch of chocolate prunes), blackcurrant, raspberry coulis and wild strawberry, combined with notes of liquorice, sweet vanilla, star anise and cardamom, as well as dark chocolate, menthol, peony and caramelized hazelnut. The tannins are a little grippy, but fine, powdery and cocoa, balanced by a salivating acidity. The finish is gourmand and persistent, with red fruits and chocolate. Silky, savoury and generous with a lovely freshness.
