Cantina Meraviglia

A Bolgheri winery inside an abandoned quarry

Cantina Meraviglia is an innovative winery located in the heart of a former quarry in Bolgheri, the result of a visionary project started in 2017 by the Bulgheroni family. Designed to blend seamlessly into the landscape, it combines architecture, wine and environmental respect (using over 95% local materials, respect of the landscape and the edge of the quarry).

The winemaking process takes place by gravity, with the grapes being delivered to the square on the highest floor, below are the rough concrete tulips and steel vats for winemaking. The first level is dedicated to the oak barrels, to the ageing and to the wine library. The natural thermal inertia and the constant humidity offer an ideal microclimate for winemaking and refinement thanks to the amphitheater volcanic rock (rhyolite). This project was designed by Bernardo Tori Studio (architect) to give importance to environmental sustainability but also to a social and economic aspects (water management, reduced light pollution, a green roofs, environmental comfort for workers and visitors…).

The 7000m2 of this facility will also be a venue for wine tourism, with a panoramic terrace overlooking the beautiful Tyrrhenian Sea, a green roof immersed in the Mediterranean scrub and with areas dedicated to the discovery the region. Alejandro Bulgheroni sees it as a symbol of cultural and territorial renaissance, rooted in his Italian origins. Cantina Meraviglia will produce wines for the two Bolgheri family estates (95 hectares in total) : Tenuta Meraviglia (higher up, volcanic soils) and Tenuta Le Colonne (close to the sea, sandy soils).
